solar water heater

Solar water heaters— also called solar hot water systems for domestic use— are a cost-effective way to get hot water for your home. They’re used in any climate, and the fuel they are using is sunshine, which is free. Solar water heating systems contain solar collectors and storage tanks. There are basically only two types of solar water heating systems: active, with pumps and controls in operation, and passive, which do not.

Passive Solar Water Heating Systems

Passive solar water heating systems are typically less expensive than active systems, but they’re usually not as efficient. However, passive systems can be more reliable and may last longer. There are two basic types of passive systems:

  • Integral collector-storage passive systems
These work best in areas where temperatures rarely fall below freezing. They also work well in households with significant daytime and evening hot-water needs.
  • Thermosyphon systems
Water flows through the system when warm water rises as cooler water sinks. The collector must be installed below the storage tank so that warm water will rise into the tank. These systems are reliable, but contractors must pay careful attention to the roof design because of the heavy storage tank. They are usually more expensive than integral collector-storage passive systems.

Active Solar Water Heating Systems

Active solar water heating systems have two types:

  • Direct circulation systems
Household water is recycled by pumps through the filters and into the building. We work well in conditions where it rarely frosts.
  • Indirect circulation systems
Pumps circulate a non-freezing, heat-transfer fluid through the collectors and a heat exchanger. It heats up the water which then flows into your house. It climes vulnerable to freezing temperatures, they are common.

solar collectors

The main component in a solar water heating kit is the solar flat plate collector. The flat plates come in a variety of sizes and choose from a few choices.

A collection of 4 ‘ x 8 ‘ flat plates can typically be used for smaller systems or 2-3 member households. Alternatively, a larger screen may be included in your kit for bigger families, hotter temperatures, or for heavy use.

All our solar flat plate collectors are SRCC certified, a requirement that allows you to take advantage of the federal tax credit of 30 percent. That greatly reduces the system’s initial costs. This credential also helps you to obtain other financial incentives, such as cash rebates, scholarships, tax breaks, and more, that may be applicable in your state or locality.

We have on the market only the highest quality and best performing flat plates. This will encourage you to spend decades enjoying easy, safe, solar hot water.
